Yet again the girls of Redland High Junior School presented a wonderful musical concert. 22 girls played their stringed instruments to a packed Junior School Activity Hall of parents/carers and invited guests.

A big 'Well Done' to everyone who took part in the fundraising day on behalf of the RNLI raising a fantastic £247.30 towards the cost of kitting out a Lifeboat Rescue Volunteer with a jacket and helmet.

During the Junior School Walk to School Week a competition was held for the most interesting photograph taken on the journey to School. The winners' photographs were then entered into a city wide competition and Ella Kipling (Year 4) has won and will be attending a special award ceremony on 5 July.

Bikeability for Years 3 and 4
Redland High Year 3 and 4 girls successfully completed their Level One Bikeability Course this week. The girls were trained by a qualified instructor, Mrs Sarah Thompson, ably assisted by two of our Year 3 Mums.

The final event in the Schools' League took place at Cleeve Hill, Gloucestershire. Both Senior and Junior Teams competed producing some great results.

Well done to the girls - Juniors and Seniors - who took part in the Athletics match against Clifton High School. The Althletics Team achieved fantastic results with Redland High winning every age group.

Students from Year 6 to Year 13 entertained the audience with a variety of songs from a wide range of styles including folk music, pop music and musical theatre.

Congratulations to all the girls who took part in the Rounders fixture against The Redmaids' School on Wednesday. Both Year 6 and Year 5 won their games, winning by at least 4 and a half rounders.

On Tuesday 18 May the girls in Lower Foundation were visited by Chris and Steve, two Fire Fighters from Bristol Airport Fire Department, who came to talk to the class about their brave and important jobs helping to deal with fires and emergency situations.

Year 4 recently went on a Geography trip to Folly Farm in Pensford. The activities were based on their current topic - water - and took place in the stunning 250 acre nature reserve.

This week the girls from Lower Foundation have been thinking about people who help us in the community and have been visited by the RNLI, a doctor and a dentist.


Redland High Juniors Orienteering Club (RHOK)
After another highly successful year for RHOK, Yvonne Bentley (Year 5) Phoebe Budd-Stone (Year 6) won their classes this year and came in 1st and 2nd at the Individual Championships beating many top class runners.

Year 5 have been studying the Tudors and decided it might be fun to start an embroidery group. The idea was that the girls would tackle Blackwork, that very iconic form of Tudor embroidery brought to England by Katherine of Aragon.

The theme was ‘Springing into Easter', and each House learned a different song. Avon sang ‘Yellow Bird', Frome sang ‘Country Garden', Severn sang ‘Coming round the Mountain' and Trym sang ‘ Easter Jubilation'.

Foundation Stage had a wonderful time at Court Farm at the end of the Spring Term. Gulliver, the girls much loved teddy bear travelled with them.

At the end of term the Earth Agents led the Junior School in an Eco assembly. Sara Tomerak, Kristina Klein, Pippa Morgan, Amelia Nichols, Emily Phillpotts, Rebecca Harrison and Grace Hillier informed us of the wonderful suggestions we have had coming into our Eco suggestion box and which ones we have been able to do something about.

The Junior School was thrilled to welcome The Young Shakespeare Company into School at the end of term to perform a 'child-friendly' production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' for Years 5 and 6 followed by a workshop.

The Year 6 girls made an almost seamless transition at Lyncombe Hill recently to the more advanced yellow course with five running alone. Phoebe Budd-Stone won the Year 6 girls' race again and extended her lead in that class.

The Junior School recently visited the Life Education Mobile Classroom. According to age, the girls took part in workshops related to personal safety, drug education, keeping their bodies healthy, and making wise choices and decisions.

Thank you very much Katie Knapp and Emily and Lucy Griffin for all your hard work in organizing and running the biscuit and cake sale in aid of the Haiti Earthquake Appeal fund. A marvellous £700 was raised.

A tasty Maths lesson for Foundation!
The Upper Foundation girls walked in the snow to Redland Bakery in support of their role play and mathematical work. All girls had the opportunity to choose a cake, pay for their choice and receive change. They explored this money back in class by making wax rubbings of their change. They also enjoyed tasting their purchases at snack time!


Brownies and Rainbows Whipsnade Trip
Redland High Brownies and Rainbows are certainly a hardy bunch, and they proved that during our wonderful day at Whipsnade Zoo! Despite some pretty awful weather our Brownies and Rainbows saw some fantastic animals and had a super time.

Foundation classes set off to Mayhem Soft Play at the Riverside Centre for their Christmas end of term treat. A good time was had by all. After an energetic hour on the soft play equipment, the Mayhem staff put on a lovely Christmas buffet lunch.  Girls were still buzzing about the trip as they returned after the Christmas break!

When the ‘Come Alive' puppet theatre company visited Redland High Junior School the girls already knew they were in for a treat because ‘Come Alive' have visited the School before and their performances are always wonderful.

Redland High Juniors were thrilled to discover on totalling up the Book Fair that an amazing £1,128.54 had been spent at the book fair, giving us a fantastic £617.00 in commission.

Redland High Juniors Hockey Match Report
Redland High U11 Hockey teams played extremely well and with great determination. Some outstanding skills were on show against Clifton High on Wednesday 14 October, especially Alice Pullin's outstanding performance as a defender. Rebecca Lemon and Yvonne Bentley scored two goals each, giving them a 4-0 win!

Mrs Helen Peake from Bristol City Council  recently visited the Junior School to lead an assembly on ‘Food Recycling'. She introduced herself as a ‘rubbish teacher', but the content of the assembly was anything but rubbish!


Year 6 Maths Challenge
A small group of Year 6 girls recently took part in a Maths Challenge against several other local independent schools. They all did really well and were excellent ambassadors for Redland High School. As many in the country enjoyed the first episode of the BBC Natural History animal behaviour series "LIFE",  Redland High Juniors remember the inspiring visit last November by Patrick Morris, producer of the Primates and Birds episodes.

There was another fantastic turn out of Redland High Junior girls at the Avon Schools' League Orienteering event in the Forest of Dean. Once again the weather was perfect and many of us enjoyed a leisurely picnic together afterwards.


Walking and Scooting are Fun!
Week beginning October 5th saw the Junior School start its ‘Walk to School Week', in recognition of the fact October is ‘International Walk to School Month'. During the week they promoted a healthy life style as well as saving on carbon emissions. They also raised pupil (and parent!) awareness of how easy it can be to fit in some exercise during the day.

The first event of the Avon Schools' Orienteering league took place on Sunday 12th September in beautiful sunshine at Blaise Castle. 24 Junior girls from years 4, 5 and 6 came along, many for their first event, supported by their parents.
