Sixth Formers at Redland High continue to pursue their interests through our wide range of societies and activities.
It is also a good time to try something new! Through their partnership with staff, our Year 12 and 13 students develop their growing sense of self-confidence. They become increasingly articulate and accomplished and we are very proud of them. As well as continuing to develop their interests or take up new ones, there are some key activities that are available exclusively to the Sixth Form:
Involvement in School Life
The School Committee, consisting of a Head Girl, Deputy Head Girl and serving members is elected by Sixth Formers and staff. Between the School Committee and House System there are nearly thirty positions of responsibility available for Sixth Formers which offers an excellent opportunity for girls to develop skills in organisation, people management and team working as well as understanding the value of commitment.
Managing and Supporting School Events
Redland High Sixth Formers are highly valued for their participation in the running of the School. There are some annual events that are wholly organised and run by Years 12 and 13 such as the Harvest Assembly and donation distribution and the Christmas Pantomime, which they produce and perform, for the entire School. Their expertise and experience are much appreciated in games teams, choirs, orchestra, clubs, School productions and many other activities.
Young Enterprise
This national scheme is designed to give young people experience of business and the chance to run their own company for a year during which time they are required to market an attractive range of products. The teams must also have a coherent business plan in place and produce a liquidation report when winding up the company at the end of the year. Redland High has enjoyed considerable success in the competition in recent years.
Debating/Public Speaking
Year 12 students have the opportunity to take part in the annual Gabblers Club competition. This is a public speaking competition for Bristol schools organised by the Bristol Hoteliers Association. The club meets once a month for a formal dinner which is followed by speeches from the students.
There is a thriving Debating Society at Redland High in which Sixth Formers take a leading role. Teams are selected and entered in the Oxford Union Debating Society where we have traditionally done extremely well. In these forums, not only do our girls extend their confidence about speaking in public, but they do so in a co-educational environment and learn to more than hold their own in pitting their wits against the boys.
Model United Nations
Each year we have Sixth Formers who are delegates at the Model United Nations in which they have to take on the mantle of representing an assigned country, study the issues relevant to that country and present them in a sympathetic manner in a mock United Nations forum. This is a weekend event at which everyone has a most enjoyable time both socially and intellectually, meeting teams from the USA, other European countries and the top independent schools in the UK.
Public speaking skills are honed and students experience the rigours of presenting issues whilst observing the protocols and conventions of an international arena. We regularly get our team motions through to the full meeting which is held on the Sunday and our individual speakers have frequently been commended or highly commended.
