Redland High School for Girls

Admissions

Foundation Stage Education

Entrance to our Foundation Stage education is between the age of 3 – 5 years. Up until the age of 4, the amount of time a child spends in school is at the discretion of parents (there is a minimum requirement of 4 half day sessions). It is usual that our youngest pupils increase the amount of time they spend in school so that by the time they are 4 years of age they can cope with full-time school. Depending upon the individual child our 3 – 5 year olds will spend varying amounts of time in structured formal lessons and learning through play. In general, we would expect that the younger children will spend most of their time learning through play whilst the older children will spend much more time in structured lessons. This combined Foundation approach allows us to offer each individual child a tailored programme of work and play to suit their level of maturity. Our Foundation Stage is staffed with two teachers and two classroom assistants.

The Junior School

Admission into Years 1 –6 is normally in September, but also throughout the year, depending on vacancies. Entrance is by an informal assessment in a friendly classroom environment. We offer means tested bursaries for entry into Years 5 and 6.

The Senior School

Admission to the Senior School is by entrance examination for all candidates. Academic, Art and Sport Scholarships are awarded annually to girls who display high academic potential at 11+ and at Sixth Form Level. Academic scholarships are also offered for pupils who enter the school at 13+. Music Scholarships are awarded to girls who are especially gifted in music at 11+, 13+ and on entry to the Sixth Form. Scholarships are valued up to a maximum of half remission of fees and are awarded entirely on merit.

The Sixth Form

A reference from the candidate's current school will be sought and applicants will be invited to an interview with the Headmistress, the Head of Sixth Form and relevant Heads of Department. At least six GCSE passes at Grade C or above will be required with at least a B grade in any subject to be studied at A Level. These six subjects must include English and Mathematics. Candidates wishing to study a new subject at A Level must have achieved at least a B grade in a related subject. Those joining the Sixth Form are expected to contribute to the communal life of the School beyond the confines of their academic programme. Redland High School has an excellent track record in helping those who join us for Sixth Form - to assimilate quickly and to achieve the best examination results of which they are capable.

In 2002, a Scholarship and Bursary appeal was launched to ensure that we can continue to support able pupils who will benefit from a Redland High School education. A number of means tested Bursary awards are available each year to those girls who show good academic ability and whose parents are in need of financial help to meet fees. The John James Bristol Foundation enables the school to provide Bursary Awards in its name to girls residing in the City of Bristol. In 2007, The Trustees of The Harry Crook Foundation announced that they will, for the foreseeable future, concentrate their available annual funds on supporting pupils at Redland High School for Girls. Their support for the school will be in three areas; Scholarships for the Sixth Form, to be known as Mary Crook Scholarships; an annual Harry Crook prize for Enterprise and Innovation, open to girls in Years 10-13; and Harry Crook Bursaries, which will be awarded on a needs basis.
