Parents from Redland High and QEH met recently for a joint pastoral information evening about ways in which parents and teachers can help young people to use the internet safely. The workshop was held in the QEH theatre and was run by four members of the Redland Community Police team who gave an excellent presentation

Redland High's Young Engineers 'Go4Set' Teams recently took part in a 'celebration and assessment' day. The organisers told Mrs Linda Fletcher, Head of Science, that the Redland High girls stood out from all the schools present in terms of behaviour, friendliness and the way they approached their work.

At Redland High we have a Tuck Shop, which sells Fair Trade chocolate, biscuits, cakes and ice cream in morning break .The Year 11 girls who organise and run the shop are absolutely delighted to have made a profit of just under £1000 between Summer 2008 and October 2009.

Senior House Debating Society Final
Congratulations to Chestnut's Isabelle Stoddart and Luna Li, who won the Senior House Debating competition at the end of last term, proposing the motion, 'This House would invest in the space race'. They produced some detailed arguments as a result of very thorough research.


Redland High Orienteers
Well done to the four Senior School girls who represented Redland High school RHOKS at the recent Avon Schools Orienteering League event in the Forest of Dean. Isabella Bentley came 2nd in the Year 8 group, and Jessica Belcher, Amelia Dore and Elinor Rogers respectively 3rd, 4th and 5th in the Year 7 group.

The Redland High Earth Matters group recently visited Bordeaux Quay to be given a tour of the restaurant, the first in Britain to achieve the Soil Association's Gold Catering Mark, an award given to restaurants using a significant amount of organic and locally sourced ingredients.

Redland High recently welcomed Dr Tim Chambers, a Consultant Physician and Nephrologist at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, Senior Clinical Lecturer in Child Health at Bristol University, Chairman of the Advisory Board on the Registration of Homeopathic Products, a magistrate and High Sheriff of the City and County of Bristol.

Recently, three teams (a record number) from Redland High competed in the Geographical Association's World Wise Quiz held at QEH School.

Just an Old Chestnut?
Are spiders afraid of conkers? The practice of placing conkers around the house to deter spiders is an old one, but is it just an old wives' tale? That highly prestigious learned society, the Royal Society of Chemistry, is offering the public a prize of £300 for the best evidence one way or the other.


Industrial Trust Awards 2009
The Industrial Trust works with global businesses, schools and universities to promote awareness of the latest technologies and engineering in textiles. Congratulations to Amy McCutcheon and Sophie Herbert who both won books and laptop cases as ‘Highly Commended' prizes at the Industrial Trust Awards Ceremony which took place at the Drapers' Hall in London.

Congratulations to all our Sixth Formers who took part in the annual X Factor event with QEH. The Redland High girls and QEH boys performed 12 different musical acts raising over £600 for the BBC's Children In Need Appeal.

This year's Autumn concert provided the audience with a very eclectic range of music, from Fauré's Pavane played by a trio of flautists to a selection of songs from ‘Bugsy Malone' - and that was just in the first half!

Ashley Scott from year 10 was delighted to be able to meet Caroline Lawrence, the author of The Roman Mysteries last week. Ashley first got hooked on the Romans through reading the adventure stories, which are set in ancient cities such as Pompeii and Ostia.

The recent National Poetry Day saw Redland High celebrating the event with gusto. All the girls of Year 7 took to the stage in Assembly to perform three poems : Tennyson‟s The Charge of the Light Brigade, Roald Dahl‟s very modern version of Little Red Riding Hood and Lewis Carroll‟s Jabberwocky.

Redland High tradition 'conkers' Guinness Book of Records!
The Guiness Book of Records 2010 has published Redland High as holding the record for the number of people playing conkers simultaneously. 197 pairs (394 players) took part in matches which continued for a minimum of 5 minutes each. Players from both the Junior and Senior schools took part, as well as staff and governors.

Redland High School prize winners were praised for their efforts by Jake Meyer who has climbed the highest mountains in the world during the School's Prize Giving ceremony at the Wills Memorial Hall.

Redland High's GCSE results this year were cause for celebration as 20 out of 78 Year 11 candidates achieved all A* or A grades and two girls managed a wonderful 11 A* passes.

Congratulations to our Year 13s - 100% pass again!
At Redland High, 62 students took their A2 levels this year and all of them passed all their subjects. A 100% pass rate is only the beginning of the good news at Redland High this year. 17 girls got 3 or more A grades, 76% of all passes were at A or B grade and the percentage of A-C grades was 91%.

Redland High's talented a capella group, The Six, sang superbly at the Prom on the Close in Clifton. The girls had won a competition to perform at the Prom and their musical talent was much in evidence during the performance in front of a large and appreciative audience.

At the end of the Summer Term girls from Years 7 to 10 took part in a Competition de théâtre or French drama festival at Redland High.


Hockey Triumph!
Ellie Purchase, Year 10, has been selected to play Hockey for South West England next season. This a great achievement for Ellie and an accolade to the standard of Hockey coaching at Redland High. Next stop the England team!

Eighteen Redland High classics enthusiasts from Years 7 to 13 recently went to Woodhouse Park, Almondsbury, to re-enact the atmosphere and activities of a Roman Legionaries' Camp. They wore improvised Roman costumes and pursued typically Roman activities.

The heat was on at the finals of this exciting cookery competition between QEH and Redland High. The young chefs of Redland High and QEH battled to satisfy the very high standards of the judges, who were: the two owners of the Michelin-starred Casa Mia restaurant, Johnray and Peter Sanchez-Iglesias, their chef-de-partie James Day, and Tracey Naish, food writer for AREA Magazine.

The Geography Department organised a competition for the girls of Year 7 to design a Coat of Arms for Britain which would display essential British characteristics.

Congratulations to Lauren Bird-Hall, Anna Garcia and Rebecca Glover (all Year 7) who entered the Young Writers Poetry Competition earlier this year with great success.


Geographers Visit Oxford University
Sixth Formers Sophie Dun, Laura Tettmar, Julia Loveless and Sian Colman and their teacher Mrs. Neil spent the day at Oxford University's School of Geography and the Environment.


UKMT Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad
In recognition of previous high performance in the UK Intermediate Mathematical Challenge, the top pupils in Redland High (Year 11 or below) were invited to take part in one of the two strands of this follow-on competition.


International Competition for Young Debaters
Congratulations to Safa Cheema and Isabelle Stoddart for representing Redland High so splendidly in this competition, hosted by the Cambridge Union Society on Saturday 25 April.


'Six' at The Prom
Redland High were delighted to learn that despite competing against adult choirs in the final audition for The Prom on the Close on 4 July, Redland High’s a cappella group ‘The Six’ have been chosen to sing.
