The Junior School

Redland High Juniors at Redland Parish Church

At the end of the Summer Term, Years 1 and 2 visited Redland Parish Church as part of their Religious Education curriculum on ‘Visiting a place of worship'. Both classes spent a little time looking at the outside of the building before going inside, sitting down quietly and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere inside the Church.

There are many things to look at, and the girls enjoyed answering a variety of questions about the interior of the building. These questions encouraged the children to look very closely at the stained glass windows, the carvings, the stonework and the inscriptions.

They also learnt that the building of the Church had been commissioned by John Cossins, who was the owner of Redland Court, now of course Redland High Senior School. He had been attending the nearby church in Westbury-on-Trym but wanted to have his place of worship closer to his home. The original vicarage is now home to some offices at 157 Redland Road.

After a very welcome drink and biscuit the girls watched a short video, made by local teenagers, to explain what church means to them. They said that for them it is a place to make friends, a place to find out about God and a place to help other people. Before we returned to School, the girls had enough time to try sketching the outside of the building and the adults were very impressed with their drawings.

It was a very enjoyable way to enhance our RE curriculum.
