The A level biologists spent two days immersed in studying ecology on their field trip to North Devon at the end of the Summer Term.
The first day was spent looking at adaptations to life on the rocky shore at Lee Bay. The girls became experts at identifying seaweeds and barnacles (very important life skills!) and found an amazing diversity of organisms even within some particularly harsh environments. The evening was spent writing up their data in a beautiful B & B in Ilfracombe.
After a much needed night‟s sleep they set off early to tackle species diversity on sand dunes. They surveyed areas of Braunton Burrows, one of the best sand dune systems in the world. Carefully avoiding the military exercise that was being conducted on the dunes that day the girls swapped their knowledge of molluscs for identifying xerophytes.
All worked exceptionally hard to collect valid and interesting data that the girls will now be able to analyse and explain in their next lesson.
