UWE Maths Event - Review by Helen Chivers

"I visited UWE for the Maths Event Day, already knowing that I wanted to read Mathematics at University, and the day convinced me that Maths is the right thing to do.

The day started off with four guest speakers, all of whom have a Maths-oriented profession. They gave talks on their jobs and what branch of Maths they specialize in. I found this interesting, especially as all four worked with Statistics and that is the branch I want to specialize in.

There were a number of different workshops available – the only downside was we could only choose two each! I think I speak on behalf of everyone when I say the workshops were very enjoyable and also appropriate to what we are currently studying. One lecturer leading us told us at the beginning that we would leave with more questions than we came with, and I certainly did.

The day finished with a lecture given by Dr John Silvester from King‟s College, London, entitled 'Primes and Polygons'. His passion for the subject was clear from the very start and if anything it was this which convinced me that I too am passionate about Maths."

Thank you very much to Helen Chivers of Year 12, who submitted this article.
