Suzy Jones (2006) has recently achieved some fantastic academic success, while still at university.
Suzy is currently studying for her Masters in Natural Sciences at the University of East Anglia. She recently attended the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry's International Chemistry Conference in Glasgow, where she was selected to do a poster on her work. This was no small achievement because most people doing these were lecturers, PhD students, post-doctorates and even people from NASA.
Her poster described her work on the measuring of antioxidant capacity with muon spectroscopy. Suzy explains: "At the moment there are four main methods to determine antioxidant capacity but none of the methods agree with one other because they use different radicals, all of which have different steric requirements. Muons are elementary particles and when they capture an electron they become muonium which is the lightest radical that can be used. My work is to use muons as the baseline for measuring antioxidant capacity as muons have no steric requirements. So far I have done Vitamins C and E.” Suzy's poster was judged one of the best and she was asked to do a flash presentation as well.
As a result of this, she has been invited to study her PhD at NASA.
