The Eruption of Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat
On Wednesday 14 October, Year 13 Geographers attended the Bristol Geographical Association's Lecture on the vulcanicity of the British island of Montserrat. The eruption of the Soufrière Hills Volcano began in 1995 and is still continuing.
Students heard about the causes of the eruption past and present and the impact that the eruption has upon the lives of people living on its flanks. They also discovered up to date techniques used to monitor the volcano using lasers and tilt meters together with 3D graphing. Cores taken from the ocean floor are also helping map the extent of the pyroclastic flows. The lecture supported the case study being used in the Geographers' A2 studies on tectonics.
