If the atmosphere in the old Elizabeth Cocks Library (Room 5) was anything to go by, those attending our Lyrics and Lines event were looking forward to a good evening's entertainment and they were not disappointed!
The first part of the evening which was held in the old Elizabeth Cocks' Library (Room 5), saw the conversation flowing as the fizzy was poured and the delicious canapés served were by our Sixth Form girls, dressed in costumes from a number of different School productions. Guests then moved to the Hall for the initial part of the performance, given by two former pupils, both of whom are highly successful actresses, Lynn Farleigh (1960) and Lucy Briggs-Owen (2004).
"Don't put your daughter on the stage, Mrs Worthington" - from the moment these first words sounded out across the Hall the audience knew they were in for a treat! The extremely amusing recital of this poem was followed by a wonderful mixture of conversation, readings and performances from the two actresses, which delighted their listeners. The extracts were extremely varied and included Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde and Noel Coward, interspersed with anecdotes from both Lucy and Lynn. The two sections of the performance were separated by a delicious dinner during which guests were invited to guess the play and character represented by each of the waitresses.
The evening, which was in aid of the Headmistress' Discretionary Fund, was a huge success and greatly enjoyed by those attending, many of whom were former Redlandites who had not returned to School for some time. Caroline Bateson expressed everyone's appreciation and said, "We are so grateful to both Lucy and Lynn for giving their time so freely in support of this cause, especially as they are both such busy women. We are also extremely grateful to the Old Girls' Guild, who sponsored the event."
