Redland High tradition 'conkers' Guinness Book of Records!
Published: 01 Oct 2009
The Guiness Book of Records 2010 has published Redland High as holding the record for the number of people playing conkers simultaneously. 197 pairs (394 players) took part in matches which continued for a minimum of 5 minutes each. Players from both the Junior and Senior schools took part, as well as staff and governors.
The initiative came from the school's Willow House which organized the record attempt in aid of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. All the Senior School players were in non-uniform, for which they paid £1, and the girls were also sponsored. £520 was donated to the NSPCC as a result.
Caroline Bateson, Headmistress, said, “When I announced the fact that we had been awarded the title of World Record holders by the Guinness Book of Records, a huge cheer went up. At Redland High the girls thrive on a balance of work and play so they respond with real enthusiasm when the fun aspects of school life are rewarded with public recognition in this way”.
